Definition
A device that works from outside the head.
EXOMIND is a treatment system that uses rapidly changing magnetic fields to stimulate targeted areas of the cerebral cortex. The magnetic fields are produced by an applicator positioned outside the head. Nothing is implanted, nothing is injected, and no surgical procedure is involved.
Patients remain awake and alert during treatment. Sessions are delivered by trained staff within a physician-led program, and treatment is only considered after an appropriate medical evaluation and safety screening.
The underlying category of technology — transcranial magnetic stimulation, usually abbreviated TMS — has been studied in clinical research for decades, most extensively in major depressive disorder.

Magnetic fields pass through the scalp and skull without being blocked by them, which is why the applicator does not need to touch brain tissue to influence cortical activity. Depth of effect is limited; TMS influences the outer cortex rather than deep structures.

Which brain regions are involved?
In depression research, the region most often discussed is the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, or DLPFC. It contributes to executive functioning, cognitive control and the regulation of networks associated with mood.
Depression, however, is not located in a single place. It involves distributed networks, and stimulating one accessible node of a network is not the same as repairing the network. Any accurate description of TMS has to keep that nuance intact.
Positioning is determined clinically for each patient rather than by a fixed mark on a chart.

Comparison
How is this different from medication?
Medication
Taken systemically. It circulates through the body and acts on receptors and signalling throughout the nervous system, which is also why systemic side effects can occur.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation
Applied to a targeted cortical region during a session. It is not taken daily as a pill and does not circulate through the bloodstream.
They are different tools, not competitors. Many patients continue medication and therapy while receiving TMS. No one should stop or change a prescribed medication without speaking to the clinician who prescribed it.
